Compost & volunteer hours

Open to the public every Saturday 9am-12pm
8380 Ventura Canyon Ave., Panorama City, Ca, 91402

Saturday mornings are for composting and community!  Pick up a pitch fork and learn the whole composting cycle from food scraps to beautiful soil amendment.  Depending on the season, volunteers may also find themselves in the orchard or garden doing some general farm projects.

We are happy to be working with LA Compost and operating both a regional hub and community drop off hub. Weekly, we process several hundred pounds of food waste from the home collection service, Compostable LA as well as fielding compostable drop-offs from individuals in our community.

Food Scraps Drop Off

If you would like to drop off your home compostable food scraps you can do so during our weekly hours on Saturday from 9am-12pm or you can drop off 24/7 via the drop off window located at the corner of our front fence (stand on the CUF rock sign and look up!).  Please place your food scraps through the gate into the designated tub, take all trash (containers or plastic bags) with you, and if you can reach through and throw some wood chips on top we'd appreciate it.

Compost Guide

Anything edible or grown from the earth can be composted.  A healthy compost has a variety of nitrogen (food scraps) and carbon sources (brown waste like mulch) and isn't heavy on just one ingredient. A compost pile that is well managed, with good aeration, heat and moisture can process meats and dairy- however many of the community hubs prefer not to accept meats and dairy because they are located in open, public spaces. To keep it simple...
YES
Fruits & Vegetables
Coffee Grounds & Filters
Eggshells
Shredded Newspapers
Old Flowers
NO
Meat & Dairy Scraps
Cat Litter
Pet Feces
Fats & Greasy Foods
Bioplastics*
* We know, it says compostable, but our piles break down food scraps faster than the bioplastics take to decompose.

Bio-plastics can be collected and remanufactured right here in LA.
