We are preparing 15,000 organic seed packets for distribution to all 72 Los Angeles Public Library branches — and we invite you to be part of the process.
Over the next few weeks, we will host multiple seed packing sessions with a variety of dates and time slots available. Join us during any open hour that works for you and contribute to this citywide effort.
During these sessions, we will label envelopes, portion seeds, and assemble packets that will be shared with library patrons across Los Angeles. Each branch will receive 200 seed packets, representing eight climate-appropriate varieties selected specifically for Southern California growing conditions: lettuce, radish, cilantro, Swiss chard, beet, bunching onion, basil, and cherry tomato.
These crops were chosen for their adaptability to container gardens, balconies, school gardens, and backyard beds. Some grow well year-round in Los Angeles, while others thrive in cool or warm seasons — offering opportunities for gardeners of all levels.
Volunteers will help apply labels, measure and portion seeds, and prepare packets for delivery. No experience is necessary. This is thoughtful, hands-on work that directly supports food access, home gardening, and community resilience across our city.
The result of our collective effort will be 200 seed packets delivered to each of the 72 library branches — thousands of opportunities for families to grow fresh food at home.

Estamos preparando 15,000 paquetes de semillas orgánicas para distribuir en las 72 sucursales de la Biblioteca Pública de Los Ángeles — y te invitamos a ser parte del proceso.
Durante las próximas semanas organizaremos múltiples jornadas de empaque con diferentes fechas y horarios disponibles. Puedes unirte en cualquier turno que se adapte a tu agenda y formar parte de este esfuerzo a nivel ciudad.
En estas sesiones etiquetaremos sobres, porcionaremos semillas y armaremos paquetes que serán compartidos con usuarios de bibliotecas en toda la ciudad. Cada sucursal recibirá 200 paquetes de semillas que incluyen ocho variedades seleccionadas especialmente para el clima del sur de California: lechuga, rábano, cilantro, acelga, betabel, cebolla de manojo, albahaca y tomate cherry.
Estas variedades fueron elegidas por su capacidad de crecer en macetas, balcones, huertos escolares y jardines domésticos. Algunas prosperan durante todo el año en Los Ángeles, mientras que otras crecen mejor en temporada fresca o cálida, ofreciendo opciones para jardineros de todos los niveles.
Los voluntarios ayudarán a aplicar etiquetas, medir y porcionar semillas, y preparar los paquetes para su distribución. No se requiere experiencia previa. Es un trabajo práctico y significativo que apoya el acceso a alimentos frescos, la jardinería en casa y la resiliencia comunitaria en nuestra ciudad.
