DIY Oyster Mushroom Cultivation Workshop
with Paula Peng of LAmushCo
Learn how to grow your own oyster mushrooms at home in this hands-on cultivation workshop led by Paula Peng, founder of LAmushCo and longtime educator in mushroom cultivation and mycelial knowledge.
Paula founded the LA Mushroom Cooperative in 2014 to teach mushroom cultivation, environmental remediation, and the practical uses of functional mushrooms. Since 2020 she has been leading DIY cultivation workshops throughout Los Angeles while developing her concepts of Ancestral Mycology and the Mycelium of the Body—approaches that connect mushroom growing with deeper ecological and cultural knowledge.
In this workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of oyster mushroom cultivation using straw, one of the easiest and most reliable ways to grow mushrooms at home.
Together we will walk through the full process step by step, including preparing and pasteurizing straw, inoculating growing material with mushroom culture, and building simple grow bags you can maintain at home.
Participants will gain a clear understanding of the mushroom life cycle and the basic conditions needed for successful cultivation.
During the workshop you will:
— Learn the basics of mushroom biology and cultivation
— Prepare and pasteurize straw growing substrate
— Inoculate straw with oyster mushroom culture
— Build your own mushroom grow bag to take home
— Learn how to care for and harvest your mushrooms
This class is beginner-friendly and designed to give participants the confidence to start growing mushrooms on their own.
All participants will leave with a prepared oyster mushroom grow bag and the knowledge to continue exploring mushroom cultivation at home.
Cost: $40 per person
